It’s hard to believe, and almost down-right depressing, to look at the calendar and realize for many, that it is just a month away from the idea of summer activities, and being able to enjoy all of them before we start gearing up for a busy fall. I could enjoy, live, and breathe summer all year long, and it always goes by far too quickly. If you are like me and enjoy every aspect of it, and want to get the most out of it yet, and still stay in the area to enjoy, I thought I would pull together a local list of fun activities, which do not do a lot of damage to our pocketbooks.
An interesting local treasure that we all have and can enjoy, is the Granger House. I recently visited and marveled at the local history that is so well preserved there, as well as learning about the family, the artifacts, and the way the house is laid out; it is a must-see in our beautiful local treasures.
Squaw Creek Park is the type of getaway that many people drive halfway across the country to get to, nestled here right in our own little vicinity. It has a gorgeous campground, awesome facilities, hiking trails, cabin rentals, and playgrounds that most places would love to have as their very own. It is used extensively for various activities, and nestled in such a way that can also be private and ideal.
Allen’s Apple Orchard is a great family activity that is local, and so enjoyable to visit and explore. They provide a variety of local produce, baked goods, and a way to just get out and enjoy nature and slow the pace down a bit.
Do not forget to visit and appreciate Uptown Marion – a great collection of boutiques, restaurants, quaint shops, friendly people, galleries and entertainment, open and appealing to all ages. It is a great and inexpensive way to keep our local area thriving – see old friends and meet new ones.
The Grant Wood Bike Trail is an easy-going path that is local and very accessible especially for family trips where bikers of all ages can enjoy and get out. A lot of it is nicely shaded in the summer, and provides just an enjoyable experience and is a way to get out and enjoy these beautiful summer days we are experiencing.
The Marion Heritage Center and Museum is a must-visit if you have not. The Marion Heritage Center serves as a community center for educational programs, historical displays, art exhibits, and cultural events. The facility is managed by the Marion Historical Society which was formed to discover, interpret and preserve Marion’s unique history and to provide activities for the community and surrounding area.
Another fun idea for summer is to take the time and visit all of our local antique shops in the area, all unique, local, and full of fond memories and beautiful signs of the past. Every time I visit one I see an item that reminds me of something that triggers a memory from the past, and I find myself on my own little mini-vacation. Trust me, there are plenty of antique venues in Marion that will help you to take a step back in time!
The Marion Municipal Pool is also a very relaxing way to just beat the heat and enjoy being in the great outdoors. It is beautifully managed and such a relaxing way to feel like you are somewhere else.
